Force kids in school to read crappy, overrated books that are “the best books ever written” solely because they’re “classics” and then call those kids idiots because those aren’t the kind of books they like to read and sit back and wonder why we have a nation full of multiple generations worth of people who willfully and proudly refuse to read.
The easiest arguments to make are the ones where you aren’t saying a damn thing.
*Advanced warning: I’m sure whoever wrote this was well intentioned and is probably a lovely person and all that but I can’t deal with this* Sorry, but come on. I feel like this is the only country in the world where anyone would say something like this. You live in a country where you have pretty much the WHOLE OF ALL THE LITERATURE EVER readily accessible and available to you! Libraries, everywhere! Books, everywhere! And you’re complaining that you’re FORCED to read? In SCHOOL? Forced to read the *scare quotes* “classics”? Thanks A LOT, public, tax provided education, trying to educate me, introduce me to new ideas! THANKS OBAMA! And who is this vague force of book snobbery, going around calling people idiots? You don’t like those books? Fine! No one cares that you don’t like the Great Gatsby or whatever, and if someone does, why do you value they’re opinion so much? Just go read something else! No one took all the rest of the books away and burned them, they’re still right there, ALL OF THEM! You can read Twilight or The Amazing Spider-Man #1.2 or If You Give A Mouse a Cookie or the novelization of Liar fucking Liar if that’s what you want, it’s all sooooo easy to find in this country, in a way it absolutely isn’t to MILLIONS of people! You have so much in front of you and you’re trying to argue that people don’t read because they were introduced to books? That’s the most defeatist thing I’ve ever heard.
